"If blocking terrorists’ access to assault weapons isn’t reason enough to hold a special session of the Legislature, what is?"
That was the question West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio posed to the Speaker of the Florida House Thursday in a letter urging him to support a special legislative session on gun laws.
Muoio sent a letter to Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli Thursday asking for the Speaker's support. The session would be to vote on whether Florida law should prevent suspected terrorists on the government's "No Fly" list or "Terror Watch" list from legally buying assault weapons.
"Assault weapons are killing machines that gun rights advocates have perverted the Second Amendment to protect. But even if you don’t share that point of view, you and your fellow legislators owe it to my city and all residents of our state to at least debate the issue," wrote Muoio.
Mayor Muoio's letter follows an effort by State Representative Dave Kerner to schedule the special session.
"As a state and a nation, when will we move beyond the simple knee-jerk resistance to any common sense gun legislation," Muoio wrote to Kerner.
A special session of the legislature can be called by either the Governor, or by a joint effort by the leadership in the State House and State Senate.
