"The frightening thing is that this could have happened right here in West Palm Beach. It could have happened in any city," said Mayor Jeri Muoio. "It is important that we think about what this means to our LGBT neighbors and friends and how threatening it must be for those people."

"We are going to raise the flag here, which is something we've done since 2002. But this is the first time we don't raise it all the way to the top. And from now on, every time we celebrate pride in June, we are also going to now have a memorial for all the people we lost in Orlando," said Tony Pakas, CEO of the Compass Community Center in West Palm Beach.

Mayor Muoio, noting that Orlando is the largest mass shootings in the nation's history, said it is "about time we do something about sensible gun control."

Mayor Muoio is a long time member of the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
