Hit the trail for a 5K Grassy Waters run against invasives

Friends of Everglades Cooperative Invasive Species Management, Inc. (FOE) is hosting the second annual "Race Against Invasives" 5K Fun Run/Walk on March 26, 2016.

The purpose of this run is to spread awareness of invasive species in South Florida. Funds raised at this event will be used to support Everglades Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (ECISMA) education and outreach and early detection/rapid response efforts to new invasive species threats.

The race will take place at Apoxee Trail (Grassy Waters Preserve) it is located approximately 1 mile north on Jog Road from intersection of Jog Road and Okeechobee Blvd.

The 5k will start promptly at 8:00am. Check-in will begin at 7:00 am and close at 7:45 am. Each runner will receive a bib and a t-shirt upon check-in. There will be a water station set up at the 2.5 km mark.

In addition to the 5k there will be an unstructured endurance run, with a 6 hour limit, commencing at 6am and finishing by 12 noon. Runners can complete as many of the 8 mile loops of the Apoxee Trail as they choose. A separate walk will commence shortly after 8 am as well.

APOXEE TRAIL extends through Grassy Waters Preserve, the water catchment area for West Palm Beach.

It is the northern most part of the Southern Everglades.

The race and walk will include refreshments and feature the availability of ecologists who know the area well and are happy to share their knowledge of this critically important area.
