Sapodilla Avenue just got a makeover, and it’s part of the city’s plan to transform West Palm Beach into a more walkable city.

The changes are part of a series of improvements being made across the downtown area following last year’s study of the city by urban walkability expert Jeff Speck. Sapodilla Avenue (between Banyan Boulevard and Fern Street) used to have two 15-foot driving lanes and no on-street parking. According to Speck, the best way to encourage walkability is to narrow driving lanes and add on-street parking.

The new and improved Sapodilla Avenue now has two 11-foot driving lanes and on-street parking on the east side of the road. Rosemary Avenue is next on the list for improvements. The plan is to change the segment from 7th to 9th Street to two way traffic.
